By Bus
Route 3 runs direct to the scenic area from Datong's New Kaili area; the Tourist 603 express serves it from the railway station.
By Taxi
About 30 minutes and modest fare from the city walls or either railway station — the practical group choice.
By High-Speed Rail
Datong South station links to Beijing (under 2 hours) and Taiyuan; the grottoes are a 30-minute taxi away.
By Air
Datong Yungang International Airport (DAT), about 17 km east of the city, takes direct flights from Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and other major cities; a taxi to town runs ¥40–60 and the grottoes lie a further 16 km west — roughly an hour's drive all told, though most visitors find the HSR via Datong South the easier arrival.
By Tour
Day tours combine Yungang with the Hanging Temple and Yingxian's wooden pagoda.
Getting Around
The scenic area is pedestrian, with shuttle carts along the 1.5-km approach; the cliff walk itself is flat and stepped in places.
