Wudalianchi rewards a circuit-based plan: the open zones scatter 5–15 km across the lava plateau with no fixed public transport between them, so build your days in morning-and-afternoon blocks — museum first for the science, springs early while the fizz is fresh, lava fields when the light turns golden. These notes blend official guidance with recent travelers' experience.
Suggested Itinerary
- Two days — Lava, Lakes & Springs
Day 1: the Volcano Geological Museum for the big picture (1–2 h), bottle-filling and the reed-marsh falls at North Medicinal Spring, sunset over Bailong Lake. Day 2: the Longmen Shizhai boulder walk (2–3 h), Wenbo's boardwalk-and-boat circuit, then Yaoquan Mountain and a farewell fill at free Erlong Spring. - One day — Lava & Springs Essence
Morning among Longmen Shizhai's birch-grown boulders; a mineral-tofu lunch in town; afternoon through Wenbo's three pools by boardwalk and boat; dusk from the Bailong Lake shore, then dinner down the Shengshui Square food street. - Winter weekend — Steam over Snow
Wenbo's steaming pools and rime-white reeds in the low light, the snow-blanketed boulders of Longmen Shizhai at off-season prices (¥20), and an afternoon warm in the museum's 3D cinema — hours shrink to ~8:30–15:30, so start early and confirm which zones keep winter hours.
What to See
Wenbo's Three Pools
Libo, Bibo and Jingbo — coral, jade and crystal basins fed by 26 springs along 1.8 km of lava flow, holding ~14°C even at −30°C, with a 20-minute boat ride on the Shilonghe to finish.
North Spring's Yishen Garden
The glass drinking pavilion over a fizzing spring, plus the Yaquan Lake waterfall — a mineral cascade that stays unfrozen and steaming even at −36°C.
Longmen Shizhai
House-sized black boulders heaped like a mountain fortress — a gentle but rocky 3.7-km boardwalk loop through birch regrown on bare rock, in one of the area's natural magnetic-field zones.
Yaoquan Mountain & Zhongling Temple
The lowest of the fourteen cones: about 400 steps up to the Buddhist temple of Zhongling (钟灵禅寺) and a sunrise-to-sunset panorama over lakes and lava.
The Five Lakes & Bailong Lake
A 20-km chain of barrier lakes strung like beads by the Baihe — boats run the largest, third-lake Bailong, for volcano reflections and the classic sunset.
Volcano Geological Museum
Five cone-shaped pavilions with 8,500 m² of exhibits and a 387-seat 3D cinema, telling the 1719–21 eruption through the Qing record: 'the earth suddenly issued fire... the land became pools'. Free, with a timed slot and midday closure.

Tips from Real Travelers
Food & Drink
Mineral-Spring Tofu
Tofu set with the cold spring water — exceptionally silken, served chilled, fried or bubbling in broth; the town's tofu houses do it a dozen ways.
Mineral Fish
Carp, catfish and crucian from the cold lava-dammed lakes, stewed or in a bubbling iron pot — portions run Northeast-huge, so order one dish per two people and stop.
Mineral Beer & Sparkling Water
The cold springs brewed and bottled on site — fine, natural bubbles with a mineral edge you will struggle to find anywhere else.
Mineral Duck Eggs & Dumplings
Salted duck eggs from the mineral-water country and wild-vegetable dumplings — the quiet stars of the evening food street.
