The most complete water town of them all — twelve islets stitched by seventy stone bridges, where indigo dye works, a poet's art museum and lantern-lit nights on the canal have set the standard every Jiangnan town now measures itself against.
Wuzhen's West Scenic Zone is the water town raised to an art form: a 4-sq-km quarter of black timber and white wall where twelve islets are laced together by more than seventy small bridges — the highest river density and stone-bridge count of any ancient town in China. Restored over a decade with obsessive care, it trades the scruffiness of living towns for a composed, understated Jiangnan that rewards slow walking.
The daytime inventory runs from craft to culture: the grass-and-indigo Caomu dye works with their hanging cloth, the Zhaoming Academy book court, the old post office where letters are still postmarked by water town, and the Mu Xin Art Museum — the lake-side gallery honouring the writer-artist who was born here. Boats thread the islets, but the bridges are the real transport.
At night the zone earns its ticket: lamps double along the black water, opera floats from bank-side stages, and the lantern market near Dingsheng Bridge glows like a fair. This is the town's second, better half — the one that keeps visitors in its waterside hotels until morning.
