Sand Lake

石嘴山市沙湖旅游景区·Yinchuan, Ningxia·Northwest China

Half sand, half lake: golden dunes slide straight into 45 km² of reed islands — cruise the channels, meet the migrating birds, ride a camel on the shore.

Sand Lake (Shahu, 沙湖) in Pingluo County, Shizuishan, is geography's own double act: a 45 km² wetland of reed islands and open water on the northern Ningxia plain, with a belt of golden dunes rising straight off the lakeshore — sand and water sharing a single frame, as the saying goes, 'half sand, half lake' (沙水相依). It ranked in China's first batch of national 5A scenic areas in 2007, and with the Helan Mountains stacked along the horizon its five raw materials — sand, water, reeds, birds and mountain — compose a landscape found nowhere else at this scale.

The lake is one of China's great bird crossroads: more than a million migratory birds pass through each year and some 200 species have been recorded — white swans, egrets, herons, gulls and cormorants that nest in the reed walls each spring. April to June brings the nesting chorus in the shallows; late autumn brings the southbound waves of geese and swans. Observation decks on Bird Island lift you above the reed tops while small boats thread the very channels the birds call home.

The classic day is a boat-braided loop: big cruisers carve the reed maze from the south gate, small craft hop to Bird Island, and the north-shore dune belt waits across the water with camel trains, sand sledding and buggies. Summer adds lotus ponds in bloom (July–August) and wetland boardwalks, while the gate-side wetland museum sets the scene before you board. Half a day covers the essentials, and the lake pairs naturally with the Helan Mountain carvings and Zhenbeipu film studio on a Yinchuan day trip — with a bowl of the famous bighead-fish-head soup in between.

Highlights

1

The Reed-Maze Cruise

The signature ride — big boats carving channels between walls of emerald reed that suddenly open onto open water and dunes.

2

Bird Island

Decks above the nesting reeds: swans, herons, egrets and gulls, at its liveliest in spring and on the autumn flyway.

3

The North-Shore Dune Belt

Golden sand on the lakeshore — camel trains, sand-sledding runs and dune buggies where the desert dips its feet in the lake.

4

Lotus Ponds & Boardwalks

July and August light the wetland pink with lotus blooms; boardwalks run out among the reeds to meet them.

5

'Desert Meets Water' Photo Spots

The frame photographers chase: dunes sliding straight into blue water beside green reed beds.

6

Golden Hour on the Marsh

Late light turns the reed shores amber and lays the lake mirror-flat — the day's softest show.
