Plan two encounters: one morning inside (booked, timed, clockwise one-way), and one outside at the magic hours - dawn light on the east face, dusk from Yaowang Hill, night from the square. Most travelers acclimatize in Lhasa two or three days before the climb; the palace itself is the steepest walk in the city.
