Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone

三亚市南山文化旅游区·Sanya, Hainan·South China

A vast Buddhist cultural park on Sanya's southern shore, crowned by the 108-meter offshore Guanyin statue - the tallest of its kind and Hainan's island treasure. Temples, vegetarian feasts and sea breezes in one serene day.

Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone unfolds along 20-plus kilometers of coastline southwest of Sanya, a 5A-rated park built around Chinese Buddhist culture. Its centerpiece is the 108-meter Guanyin of the South Sea, a three-faced bronze statue rising from the water on an offshore pedestal - taller than the Statue of Liberty and revered across Hainan as the island's guardian treasure.

Beyond the great statue, the park strings together Nanshan Temple, the Non-Duality Gate, a forest of commemorative stupas, the Longevity Valley and gardens of bodhi trees. Courtyards of white walls and golden roofs step down toward the sea, and the pace - slow strolls, incense drifting, monks chanting at dawn - feels a world away from Sanya's beach resorts.

The zone is also famous for its vegetarian cuisine: the park's buffet restaurants turn out dozens of monastery-style meatless dishes that draw food pilgrims in their own right. With an on-site hotel and shuttle buses linking the gates, Nanshan works equally well as a half-day spiritual detour or a full, unhurried retreat.

Highlights

1

Guanyin of the South Sea

The 108-meter three-faced offshore Guanyin is the world's tallest such statue. Walk the 280-meter causeway to circle the pedestal's base halls and look up into three serene faces facing land and ocean.

2

Nanshan Temple

The largest Buddhist temple built in China since 1949, its vermilion halls terraced against the hillside. Catch the morning chants, the drum and bell towers, and sea views from the highest courtyard.

3

Non-Duality Gate

The park's grand southern portal, a white stone archway symbolizing the Buddhist idea that all things are one - the classic photo frame for arriving visitors.

4

Golden Jade Guanyin

A shrine housing a Guanyin statue inlaid with gold, silver and jewels, crafted with state-level precision - one of the park's most visited inner halls.

5

Monastery Vegetarian Buffet

Dozens of mock-meat monastery dishes - 'fish', 'duck' and 'pork' recreated from mushrooms, tofu and konjac - served in the park's Yuanqi Lou restaurant near the temple.

6

Longevity Valley & Stupa Forest

A shaded valley walk dotted with boulders carved with the character for longevity, leading toward rows of white commemorative stupas beneath casuarina pines.
