Mount Wuyi

南平市武夷山风景名胜区·Nanping, Fujian·East China

China's fourth World Heritage site and one of its first national parks — a Danxia range of red cliffs and green water where the Nine-Bends stream threads beneath 1,000-metre peaks, and the tea that named 'Bohea' and 'Lapsang Souchong' grows on its cliff gardens.

Wuyi Mountain is the double rarity on China's trophy shelf: a UNESCO World Cultural AND Natural Heritage site (1999, the world's 23rd, China's 4th) and one of the country's first five national parks (2021). The range covers 100,000 hectares of Danxia sandstone — 'green water, red mountains' — with more than 110 peaks over 1,000 metres and Huanggang, the 'roof of East China', at 2,158 m.

The visit pivots on two experiences. First, the Nine-Bends stream: a two-hour bamboo-raft drift through the mountain's whole gallery — cliffs, boat coffins of the ancient Yue people, the Jade Maiden Peak — booked in timed slots days ahead. Second, the trails: Tianyou Peak's stone stairs above the river bend, the Thread-of-Sky gorge (narrowest passage in China at 30 cm), Tiger Roar Rock, and the north side's Dahongpao trail from the mother trees of the world's most famous oolong down past tea gardens to the Water Curtain Cave.

Culture runs as deep as the gorge: Zhu Xi taught Neo-Confucianism here for half a century, the ruined imperial tea works supplied the Russian court, and the night spectacle 'Impression Dahongpao' plays the mountain off against the tea legend. Two full days is the honest minimum.
