Mount Huangshan (Yellow Mountain)

黄山市黄山风景区·Huangshan, Anhui·East China

Huangshan punishes improvisation — cable car times, hotel beds and the 15:00 trail cutoff all need planning. These notes blend official guidance with Mafengwo travelers' experience.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. The Classic Two Days
Day 1: Yungu cable car up → Begin-to-Believe Peak → North Sea → West Sea Grand Canyon loop → sunset at Bright Summit → summit hotel. Day 2: sunrise → Flying Rock → Guest-Greeting Pine → Jade Screen → down by Yuiping cable car.
  2. One Day — Back Mountain
Up by Yungu cable → Begin-to-Believe → Dispersing Clouds Pavilion → canyon overlook → Bright Summit → down the same way — the views-per-step maximum.
  3. One Day — Front Mountain
Up by Yuiping cable → Guest-Greeting Pine → One-Line Sky → Aoyi Peak → Bright Summit and return — the classical gauntlet.

What to See

1

Bright Summit

The 1,860 m hub where front and back mountains meet — sunrise and sunset both work from here.

2

Refreshing & Lion Terraces

The North Sea viewpoints for cloud seas over the valley — the classic tripod spots.

3

Begin-to-Believe Peak

The peak that finally makes visitors 'begin to believe' the paintings — pines on spires over cloud.

4

Monkey Watching the Sea

The rock shaped like a gazing monkey — the mountain's most characterful stone.

5

Dispersing Clouds Pavilion

The West Sea balcony — if cloud sea is on, this is the front row.

6

Hot Springs at the Foot

The fourth Wonder — the springs below Ciguang Pavilion for the after-mountain soak.

Tips from Real Travelers

Food & Drink

Summit Hotel Meals

Hot noodles and set meals at mountain-top hotels — expensive by weight, reasonable by altitude.

Tangkou Town Eats

Anhui classics at base-town prices — stinky mandarin fish and bamboo dishes before or after the climb.

Huangshan Biscuit (黄山烧饼)

The 'crab-shell' shaobing — a palm-size flaky puff of preserved vegetable and pork fresh from the charcoal oven, ¥5–8 apiece; buy them hot in Tangkou before the climb or from the old-line bakeries on Tunxi Old Street, and pocket a bag for the trail.

Mountain Snacks

Tea eggs, cured sausage and steamed buns on the trail — carried up so you don't have to carry much.
