Gulangyu Island

Gulangyu Island

厦门市鼓浪屿风景名胜区·Xiamen, Fujian·East China

A 1.78-square-kilometre car-free island of a thousand consulates-turned-villas, China's densest piano population and UNESCO-listed 'International Architecture Expo' — a fifteen-minute ferry from Xiamen that expects you to walk everywhere.

Gulangyu (Kulangsu) is the pedestrian island across the water from Xiamen: no cars, no bikes in practice, a maze of lanes threading between more than a thousand historic buildings — consulates, mansions and villas in a blend of European, Nanyang and Minnan styles that earned it the nickname 'World Architecture Museum' and, in July 2017, UNESCO World Heritage status as China's 52nd site.

The island's second life is music: the highest piano density in the country, a piano museum inside the classical Shuzhuang Garden, and an organ museum in the eight-sided Bagua Building. The sightseeing spine runs from Sunlight Rock — the 92-metre summit with the classic panorama of red roofs and sea — down through the garden to the Zheng Chenggong statue park.

Most visitors do it as a day trip: ferries run from Xiamen's cruise terminal, tickets go via the official WeChat account up to fifteen days ahead, and the island's lanes — Longtou Road's snack crowd excepted — reward slow wandering, stamp-collecting booklets and photo corners. One full day is the reference visit; overnighters get the quiet island after the day-trippers leave.
