Baiyun Mountain (Guangzhou)

Baiyun Mountain (Guangzhou)

广州市白云山景区·Guangzhou, Guangdong·South China

Guangzhou's 5A 'city lung' — a 21-km², 30-peak massif capped by 382-m Moxing Ridge, where a ¥5 gate opens onto sunset, city lights and the morning-hike ritual.

Baiyun Mountain is a mountain inside the city: a 20.98-km² outlier of the Jiulian range (九连山) whose thirty-odd peaks shoulder up out of Guangzhou's northeastern districts, barely 7.5 km from the old city center. Locals call it the 'city lung' for green cover above 95% and 'First Beauty of the Goat City' (羊城第一秀), the headline of the new Eight Scenes of Yangcheng and half of Guangzhou's classic 'Cloud Mountain, Pearl Water' pairing with the Pearl River. The name is literal — after rain, white clouds settle over the slopes. A National Scenic Area since 2002 and the city's only one, it was rated a national 5A attraction in 2011.

The pedigree is deep: a Neolithic site at Huangpo Cave, the Qin-era hermit-immortal An Qisheng gathering herbs, Jin-dynasty alchemist Ge Hong refining elixirs, and the Liang-dynasty monk Jingtai raising the mountain's first temple. Tang–Song poets — Du Shenyan, Han Yu, Su Shi — wrote it into literature, and three Baiyun sights made the Ming–Qing 'Eight Scenes of Yangcheng', among them Baiyun Evening Gaze (白云晚望), still the signature sunset overlook. Only one ancient structure survived to 1949 — the granite 'First Peak of the South' archway by the hilltop — yet the living tradition outshines any relic: sixteen to twenty million visits a year, retirees on ¥20 monthly passes streaming upward from dawn.

Seven touring areas string the massif south to north — Luhu's lake park, Santailing, the bird ravine of Mingchun Valley, Moxing Ridge, the big northwest Mingzhu Lou sector, Fei'e Ridge's sculpture park and Heyiling. A 1986 cable car — mainland China's first domestically designed aerial ropeway, rebuilt as eight-person gondolas — lifts you from beside Yuntai Garden's Butchart-inspired terraces to Hilltop Plaza in about six minutes, and a 15–20-minute walk beyond tops out at Moxing Ridge (摩星岭), 382 m, the highest point of urban Guangzhou. The classic evening: sunset from the summit, then the switch-on of Canton Tower and Zhujiang New Town's lights from Baiyun Evening Gaze — all behind a ¥5 entrance that makes this one of China's great scenic bargains.

Highlights

1

Moxing Ridge

The 382-m summit of urban Guangzhou — a 360° sweep over Canton Tower, Zhujiang New Town and the Pearl River, with a padlock-clipped 'Lock of Love' terrace and the classic sunset show (separate ¥5).

2

Baiyun Evening Gaze

The Ming–Qing 'Eight Scenes' overlook beside Hilltop Plaza — sunset melting into the glittering switch-on of the southern city, steps from the cable car.

3

The 1986 Cable Car

Mainland China's first domestically designed aerial ropeway — 1,617 m over the emerald canopy to Hilltop Plaza in about six minutes; the ¥25 up-ticket includes your entrance.

4

Yuntai Garden

China's largest Western-style landscaped garden, loosely modeled on Canada's Butchart Gardens — cascade, glass conservatory, Dutch windmill, sister-city gifts, tulips in March and sunflowers in October (¥10).

5

Mingchun Valley

A 56,000-m² netted ravine aviary billed as China's largest natural-style bird cage — peacocks and red-crowned cranes roaming free (¥10).

6

Huangpo Cave Reservoir & Peach Blossom Ravine

The quiet northwest: mirror water nicknamed 'Guangzhou's Little Jiuzhaigou' with bald cypress flaming red Nov–Dec, beside ~4,000 peach trees blooming late January–early March.
