Golden Tengger dunes slide into a Yellow River bend — camel caravans, sheepskin rafts, sand sledding and star camps in Ningxia's first-batch 5A desert park.
Shapotou (沙坡头) is geography's great stage trick: the golden dunes of the Tengger Desert march south and slide, at a steep pitch, straight into a green bend of the Yellow River. A Silk Road frontier and one of China's first 5A-rated parks (2007), it anchors the 'desert-water city' scenery of Zhongwei, Ningxia — the sweep behind Tang poet Wang Wei's celebrated image of lone smoke over the vast desert and the round sun sinking into the long river.
The park plays out in two zones. The Yellow River zone is anchored by the namesake 100-metre 'Shapo' sand slope — on warm, dry days it hums like a struck bell as sledders carve down, one of China's four 'singing sands'. Below, boatmen float sheepskin rafts (羊皮筏子), inflated goatskins lashed to a wooden frame, much as they have for centuries; above, a zipline flies round-trip across the whole river bend while speedboats churn the shallows. In the Tengger desert zone, camel caravans thread the ridges, off-road buggies surf the crests, and yellow gondolas drift over the sand.
Shapotou is also an ecological landmark: since 1958, scientists pinned the moving dunes with one-metre straw checkerboard grids, saving the Baotou–Lanzhou railway — the first trunk line ever driven through tall shifting dunes — a feat cited worldwide as a model of desert railway engineering. Today star camps crown the dunes for sunsets, stargazing and sunrise, and around 1.3 million visitors a year come for the improbable marriage of sand and water.
Highlights
The 100-Metre Sand Slope
The park's namesake dune dives into the Yellow River — and in warm, dry weather it hums like a bell as you sled down.
Sheepskin Raft Drift
Ride a raft of inflated goatskins down the Yellow River — boatmen sing northwestern folk songs on the gentle 20-minute float.
Camel Caravans on the Tengger
The classic caravan ride through the golden dunes — swaying, photogenic, pure Silk Road atmosphere.
Fly Across the Yellow River
The roughly 820-metre round-trip zipline over the great river bend — a weight minimum applies to lighter riders.
Sand Sledding & Dune Buggies
Brake-equipped sleds on the long river-side chute, plus off-road buggies surfing the dune crests — the back seats get the biggest thrill.
Straw Grids & the Desert Railway
The 1958 straw checkerboard lattice that tamed the dunes protecting the Baotou–Lanzhou railway — a world-cited model of sand control.
