China's first theme-park resort: the world in miniature at Window of the World, China in a day at Splendid China, Happy Valley thrills and free OCT Harbour nights.
Shenzhen OCT Tourist Resort (华侨城旅游度假区) is where China's theme-park industry was born. Here on Shennan Avenue, overlooking Shenzhen Bay in Nanshan District, OCT Group opened Splendid China in 1989 — the mainland's first true theme park and then the world's largest miniature landscape park — then added the China Folk Culture Village (1991), Window of the World (1994) and Happy Valley (1998), the park that seeded a nationwide chain. In 2007 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism inscribed the whole 4.8 km² resort as a national 5A scenic area in the first batch of ratings; today it welcomes around six million visitors a year.
One rating, four very different days. Window of the World (世界之窗) compresses the planet into eight zones — more than 130 replicas, from the pyramids and Sphinx to Angkor Wat and the Manhattan skyline, beneath a 108-metre, 1:3 Eiffel Tower that anchors the fountain plaza. Splendid China Folk Culture Village (锦绣中华民俗村) arranges 82 miniature monuments across the map of China, from Great Wall to Potala Palace, beside 28 ethnic-village compounds where Wa hair-swinging and Dai peacock dances roll into grand evening galas. Happy Valley (欢乐谷) piles up a hundred-plus rides across nine themed zones, and free-entry OCT Harbour (欢乐海岸) finishes the list with canals, a mall and a waterside show theatre on the bay.
Evenings are the resort's signature act: the Eiffel's light-and-music show from about 19:15, pyro-musicals and drone displays, and the 21:20 molten-iron fireworks that rain sparks over Splendid China — all reachable on night tickets from ¥99. Between gates, the OCT quarter is one of Shenzhen's leafiest neighbourhoods, stitched together by a mangrove wetland, creative-loft galleries and the Shenzhen Bay promenade, with Hong Kong just 4.3 km away across the water. One planning caution: OCT East (东部华侨城), 35 km east in Yantian, is a separate 4A resort — a different ticket and a different day.
