Two lines organize everything here: the east shuttle line for gentle lake-to-hub sightseeing (its cableway twin is suspended for construction), and the west-line trail where the mountain's steep soul lives. Every plan converges on Zhongtai, the mid-mountain hub — the summit is closer than it looks, but the stairs are every bit as steep as legend says. These notes blend official guidance with recent travelers' experience.

What to See
Huangcheng Palace Cluster
The mountain's most complete Ming complex — tiled halls and incense terraces balanced on the cliff edge of the summit ridge, reward of the classic climb.
Ladder to Heaven
The 369-step stairway cut at 60–70° between cliffs, first chiseled in the Tang dynasty — with the stone marking where the Yellow Emperor asked Guangchengzi about the Dao near its lower end.
Leisheng Peak
A blade of ridge with chained walkways and tiny shrines; the Ming Jiuguang Hall preserves the mountain's complete sculpted pantheon of thunder gods.
Zhongtai & East Terrace (中台)
The mid-mountain hub where trails and shuttles meet — Buddhist Falun Temple, an ancient pagoda cradling a century-old pine, and East Terrace's sunrise deck.
Xiangshan Summit & Hunyuan Tower (香山)
The 2,123.5 m roof of the mountain — a geometric tower beside the 'Birthplace of the Dao' stele, with the widest panorama over the massif.
Tanzheng Lake
The mirror at the foot — boat rides below the Danxia walls, and the classic cliff reflection best caught from the shore paths at first light.

Food & Drink
Pingliang Red Beef (平凉红牛)
The region's signature red-cattle beef — rich and tender, best as bubbling hotpot or charcoal barbecue.
Jingning Braised Chicken (静宁烧鸡)
The neighboring county's century-old classic — glossy, spice-perfumed chicken that made its name as Silk Road road food.
Salt-Roasted Skewers (烤盐筋)
The local barbecue must-order — salt-crusted beef and lamb sinew charred over open flame.
Pingliang Crisp Flatbread (平凉酥饼)
Flaky, layered flatbread from the city's old ovens — perfect trail fuel with a bowl of beef soup.
