Daxiaodongtian (Caves of Heaven), Sanya

三亚市南山大小洞天旅游区·Sanya, Hainan·South China

Sanya's free-entry Taoist seaside 5A — 800-year-old sea caves, Song-dynasty cliff inscriptions and 30,000 'immortal' dragon-blood trees on turquoise Yazhou Bay.

Daxiaodongtian (大小洞天), the 'Greater and Lesser Caves of Heaven', is an 800-year-old Taoist park where Nanshan Mountain — anciently Aoshan, 'Turtle Mountain' — tumbles into the turquoise sweep of Yazhou Bay, 40 km west of Sanya. Tradition dates the scenic spot to 1187, when Song-dynasty officials first scouted this coast; in 1247 the Yazhou prefect Mao Kui discovered the sea cave he named the 'Lesser Cave of Heaven', carved its characters into the rock, and left an essay-in-stone that made the park a byword ever since. Taoists revere it as a 'cave-heaven and blessed land' of the South Sea — the legendary retreat of Bai Yuchan, fifth patriarch of the Southern School of Taoism, and the cradle of Hainan Taoism. Modern recognition caught up in May 2007, when it joined China's very first national batch of 5A scenic areas.

The numbers behind the scenery: 22.5 square kilometres strung along the coast in six zones and more than fifty sights, laid out long and linear from the main gate to Xiaoyue Bay. Coral rocks worn by ten thousand years of surf take the shapes of boats, peaches and immortal footprints; a house-sized boulder on the forested hillside answers the sea cave as the 'Greater Cave'; and roughly 30,000 dragon-blood trees — the fabled 'Nanshan immortal pines' — cling to the shore, including China's largest ancient grove, with more than 150 trees over 500 years old. Song cliff inscriptions, a 'Dragon' character in the Kangxi Emperor's own hand, and the tale of the monk Jianzhen, blown ashore here by a typhoon in 748 AD on his epic voyage toward Japan, thread the sea-viewing trail with eight centuries of history.

Since October 1, 2022 the park has been free — one of the state-owned gems Sanya returned to the public — with only a real-name online booking standing between you and the gate. A ¥28 shuttle (coffee coupon included) eases the long coast; a rainbow slide, jungle coaster, helicopter rides and an RV campground add modern fun; Xiaoyue Bay tempts with Class-I water and a photogenic white lighthouse. The setting seals the visit: the Buddhist Nanshan Cultural Zone, with its 108-metre offshore Guanyin, is eight minutes away by taxi — one mountain, two of Hainan's first 5A parks, the Taoist one free and the Buddhist one ticketed. Come late afternoon, when the light turns golden on the reef.

Highlights

Lesser Cave of Heaven (小洞天)

The park's icon: a 28-metre-deep sea cave inscribed by prefect Mao Kui in 1247 — stand within its stone frame, turquoise sea behind, for the classic shot.

2

South Sea Gate of Blessing

A Bali-style split stone gate framing the open sea just inside the entrance — Sanya's favourite wedding-photo arch, glowing at golden hour.

3

Some 30,000 'living fossil' dragon-blood trees — the so-called Nanshan immortal pines — including 150-plus ancients over five hundred years old.

4

South Sea Dragon King's Court

A sea-facing dragon compound with the Kangxi Emperor's 'Dragon' character and a gilded 1.9-metre Dragon King guarding Longwang Beach.

Monumental bronzes marking where the Tang monk Jianzhen was blown ashore in 748 AD on his fifth attempt to reach Japan — history's most famous detour.

Xiaoyue Bay & the Lighthouse

A crescent of crushed-shell sand with Class-I water at the park's east end, watched over by the white baseline lighthouse on Shenshi Reef.
