Luoyang's 5A cloud kingdom — 2,216-m Yuhuang Peak sunrises over seas of cloud, a 123-m waterfall canyon and an 80,000-m² alpine oxygen bar in the Funiu Range.
Baiyun Mountain (白云山) rises in Song County, southern Luoyang — not Guangzhou's low city park of the same name, but a 168-km² high-mountain resort deep in Henan's Funiu Range, the eastward reach of the Qinling chain and part of a UNESCO World Geopark. A national 5A scenic area since 2011, it is also a National Forest Park and the core of the Funiu Mountain National Nature Reserve: 37 peaks top 1,500 m, forest cloaks 98.5% of its ground, and veteran Xinhua president Mu Qing inscribed it 'Baiyun, the beauty of all under heaven' — a massif ranked among 'China's Most Beautiful Places' in 2005.
The mountain's signature is superlatives stacked on geography: the massif straddles the watershed of three river systems — Yangtze, Yellow River and Huai — 'three rivers' waters on one peak.' Yuhuang Peak, the 2,216-m 'Roof of the Central Plains,' catches dawns at 05:00–06:30 above rolling seas of cloud; the Nine-Dragon Grand Canyon drops some 600 m past roughly 18 waterfalls, led by the ~123-m Nine-Dragon Falls whose sunlit spray throws rainbows; and an 80,000-m² alpine forest oxygen bar — negative-ion counts up to ~8,670 per cm³ — spreads flat boardwalks under high pine and larch. Two mirror lakes, a reed-flower valley, the granite 'Little Huangshan' crests and an alpine peony garden that blooms some 20 days after Luoyang's city peonies complete the map, all in summer air averaging 18–22°C — a genuine 8–10°C cooler than the lowland cities.
Half the romance is the arrival: an 18-km, 318-bend road nicknamed the Baiyun Sky Road — 'Henan's Route 318' — climbs from the Tonghe visitor center to the Central Plaza, where hotels, lakes and the internal bus network sit high on the massif. That altitude shapes every good plan: the sunrise cable car starts around 04:00 on published dates, down jackets make sense even in July, and the classic Luoyang combo pairs the city's Longmen Grottoes with a night spent above the clouds — with Laojun Mountain, a separate 5A about 1.5 h away in Luanchuan, as the ambitious Funiu-loop extension.
Highlights
Sunrise on Yuhuang Peak
The 2,216-m 'Roof of the Central Plains' — first light over a sea of clouds, reached past red-birch woods, Flying Rock and Yuhuang Pavilion.
Nine-Dragon Falls
A ~123-m plunge down nine rock veins in a 600-m canyon threaded by some 18 waterfalls and pools — sunny afternoons add the rainbows.
Alpine Forest Oxygen Bar
80,000 m² of pine-and-larch boardwalks, streams and swings — the largest forest oxygen bar in the Central Plains, made for slow families.
Glass Sky Bridge
A 190-m glass-floored bridge hung ~1,500 m over the canyon, with cliff plank paths and a glass boardwalk — 09:00–17:00, fair weather only.
Baiyun & Yuhuang Lakes
Two alpine mirrors by the Central Plaza — bamboo rafts in summer, autumn reflections — with reed meadows on the loop between.
The Baiyun Sky Road
The 18-km, 318-bend approach itself — 'Henan's Route 318' — best admired from the Siliping terrace on the climb up.
