Nanjing's lantern-lit river heart — the Confucius Temple quarter where Ming-era examination halls, paddle-boat cruises and riverside snack streets meet the glow of the Qinhuai after dark.
For five centuries the Qinhuai was where Nanjing celebrated: scholars sat imperial exams at the Jiangnan Examination Hall, merchants built guild halls along the water, and the painted pleasure barges of 'Qinhuai belles' made the river a byword for the good life. Today's scenic belt restores that world in a walkable quarter — the Confucius Temple itself, the largest examination hall complex preserved in China, Zhan Garden's Ming courtyards, and the old East Water Gate where the canal enters the city.
The signature experience is the boat: painted barges and hand-sculled skiffs leave the pier below the temple for a 50-minute circuit — Bailu Zhou park, the Seven-Colour Water Street, the East Water Gate and Zhonghua Gate's floodlit wall — with recorded commentary tying each bank to its story. By day the river is pleasant; after the lamps come on it becomes the Nanjing everyone photographs.
The quarter peaks twice: at the Qinhuai Lantern Festival each spring, when the whole river floats on colour, and every ordinary evening, when the snack streets behind the temple fill with duck, soup dumplings and sesame everything.
