Fenghuang Ancient Town

Fenghuang Ancient Town

湘西土家族苗族自治州凤凰古城旅游区·Xiangxi, Hunan·Central China

A loop town of two banks and five bridges — walk it twice, once for the lanes, once for the night. These notes blend official guidance with Mafengwo travelers' visits.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. The One-Night Classic
Afternoon: East Gate tower → Tiaoyan → riverside walk → Shen Congwen home → dinner in the lanes → night river loop; next dawn: mist, laundry stones, breakfast noodles, out by 10.
  2. Two Days with the Ticket
Day 1 the free river circuit; Day 2 the nine-sight combo (Miao palace, museums, towers) plus a boat.
  3. The Xiangxi Circuit
Zhangjiajie forest park → Furong Town → Fenghuang night → (optionally Chadong 'Border Town' upstream) — 3–4 days by tour or bus.

What to See

1

Wanming Pagoda Bend

The seven-tier pagoda across from the stilt rows — anchor of both dawn and night photos.

2

North Gate Tower

The riverside bastion with the boat steps — the town's stone identity.

3

The Old Lanes Backstage

Away from the river: chandler's workshops, silver smiths, Miao embroidery shops.

4

Shen Congwen's Grave

The listening-stone by the river at Wuxi slope — a five-coloured rock, per his wish, above the water he wrote.

5

The Miao Chief's Palace

The stilted court of the last Tujia-Miao magistrate — town history in carved wood (combo ticket).

6

Chaodong Day Trip

Ustream, the real 'Border Town' of the novel — Miao festivals and the clean Youshui river.

Tips from Real Travelers

Food & Drink

Xiangxi Sour Fish Hotpot

The region's defining table — river fish with pickled chilli and sour broth.

Miao Blood Duck & Bacon

Tujia smoked pork and the dark, rich Miao duck — the two meats of the lanes.

Ginger Candy & Rice Tofu

Fenghuang's hand-pulled ginger candy (made in shop windows) and street rice tofu with pickles.

Miao Shefan Festival Rice

Glutinous rice steamed with wild artemisia, preserved pork, peanuts and tiny Tuo shrimp — Fenghuang's portable feast, ladled from stalls by the Rainbow Bridge and in the night market.
