A 60-km Yangtze tributary born on Shennongjia, where wooden peapod boats ride emerald gorges and the last Yangtze trackers haul their ropes — 5A gorge cruising.
Shennong Stream (神农溪) is a 60-kilometer ribbon of emerald water that rises on the southern slopes of the Shennongjia massif — whose main peak is styled the 'No.1 Peak of Central China' — and threads through deep gorges to join the Yangtze at Xirangkou, between Wu Gorge and Xiling Gorge at Badong County, Enshi. Rated a national 5A scenic area in May 2011, it is the county's flagship and one of Enshi Prefecture's three 5A jewels alongside Enshi Grand Canyon and Tenglong Cave. Legend holds that the divine farmer-emperor Shennong gathered herbs here and drifted down the stream that took his name; Bill Gates and Warren Buffett cruised these waters in 1995, and the beloved folk song 'Love of the Boat Trackers' was filmed on them.
The stream strings together four gorges, each with a character of its own. Longchang, the 'grand' first gorge, runs under 20 m wide in places with mirror-calm water, its cliffs pocked with 2,000-year-old Ba hanging coffins and the relics of an ancient plank road. Parrot Gorge, the 'elegant' one, keeps flowers in every season — spring roses to wintersweet — plus a three-colored spring and the stream's largest karst cave. Mianzhu, the 'perilous' side gorge, chokes to a 'one strip of sky' barely 5 m wide over more than thirty shoals, while Shennong Gorge opens wide beneath a hundred-meter waterfall whose cliff cave once spilled fish before storms. Swiftlets swarm the mouth of Yanziqian Karst Cave and monkeys work the forested banks.
The zone's soul, though, is the 纤夫 (qianfu) — the boat trackers who for centuries hauled wooden 'peapod' boats (豌豆角) up these rapids by bamboo rope, and who survive here as living heritage, celebrated on CCTV in 2026 for turning their culture 'from watching to playing' with dry-land hauling and live-scene drifting. Route B of the official tour shuttles you to the Tracker Culture Corridor upstream to ride a peapod boat as the boatmen chant work songs listed as national intangible heritage; summer adds rubber-dinghy drifting in water so clean it is nicknamed 'mineral water'. The whole trip is boat-based with minimal walking, and it pairs naturally with the Three Gorges Dam downstream and Shennongjia at the headwaters.
Highlights
Longchang Gorge
The 'grand' first gorge — under 20 m wide in places, its mirror water doubling the green cliffs, with coffins and plank-road relics on the rock.
Peapod-Boat Tracker Ride
Route B's climax: a wooden peapod boat with trackers wading ashore, hauling rope and chanting — the last living tracker culture on the Yangtze.
The Hanging Coffins
Ba-people cliff burials over 2,000 years old, resting on ledges high above Longchang Gorge; how they got there is still unsolved.
Parrot Gorge in Bloom
The 'elegant' gorge — flowers in all four seasons, a three-colored spring, evergreen banks alive with monkeys and swiftlets.
Mianzhu Gorge's One Strip of Sky
The 'perilous' side gorge — stalactites and thirty-plus shoals between walls that nearly touch, narrowing to barely 5 m.
Summer 'Mineral-Water' Drifting
July–August opens the rubber-dinghy run over the stream's crystal shallows — riding water clear enough to be called mineral.
