The 'Pearl of North China' - 370 square kilometers of interlaced lakes, reed marshes and lotus gardens two hours from Beijing, now the blue-green heart of the Xiong'an New Area, explored entirely by boat.
Baiyangdian is the largest freshwater lake system on the North China Plain - 143 shallow lakes stitched together by reed-filled channels across the Anxin, Xiongxian and Renqiu counties of Hebei. For centuries it has been the region's fish-and-reed larder and water-village world; today it also sits at the geographic heart of the Xiong'an New Area, the national development zone southwest of Beijing, and its water quality and birdlife have returned in force.
The classic visit is entirely afloat: boats from the Anxin tourist dock thread the reed corridors between open water and lotus beds to the lake's island gardens. The Lotus Grand View Garden alone grows 366 varieties - China's largest lotus collection, including American yellow lotus, Japan's Oga lotus and the South American giant water lily whose pads hold several kilograms - and July's lotus festival paints whole bays pink and white.
Baiyangdian is also literary and military legend: the setting of the beloved film 'Little Soldier Zhang Ga' and the wartime base of the Yanling guerrilla flotilla, commemorated on the lake's islands. Families pair the boat day with a farmhouse lunch - the famous 'whole fish pot' stewed over a wood fire with tofu and glass noodles - followed by lotus-leaf tea on a lakeside veranda.
